Story
Wayne infiltrates a fundraiser promoted by Luthor to retrieve data from LexCorp's mainframe, but his drive is stolen by mysterious antiques dealer Diana Prince, although he later receives it back from her. He learns not only of Author's experiments with Krypton, but also his ongoing investigation about humanitarians including Prince herself, whom he learns is an immortal warrior. Driven by nightmarish visions of a future where Superman has reduced Earth to a post-apocalyptic wasteland, which are interrupted by a time traveler who tries to warn Wayne. Batman attempts to retrieve the Luthor's Kryptonite, but is intercepted by Superman, who orders him to cease his activities. Finch summons Superman to a Congressional hearing to debate the validity of his actions, where Luthor masterminds a bombing that kills dozens of people, including Finch. The public blames the bombing on Superman, who goes into self-imposed exile.
Batman retrieves the Kryptonite and prepares to launch a preemptive strike against Superman. Elsewhere, Luthor activates the Genesis Chamber aboard the scout ship and splices his own DNA and Zod's. Luthor endangers Superman's love interest Lois Lane to lure him to LexCorp Tower, where he reveals that he has been aware of Superman's secrets for some time. Lex blackmails Superman into confronting Batman by holding his adoptive mother, Martha Kent, hostage at an undisclosed location. Superman is unable to reason with Batman, leading to a vicious fight in which Batman nearly kills Superman with a Kryptonite spear. When Superman tells Batman to "save Martha" – which was also Bruce Wayne's mother's name – Batman comes to his senses realizing that Superman is not a threat. Upon learning of Author's plan, Batman leaves to rescue Martha while Superman confronts Author, who unleashes a monstrous artificially bred creature known as Doomsday. Superman and Batman join forces to fight him and are aided by an arriving Prince in her warrior attire, but are outmatched due to Doomsday's ability to absorb and redirect energy. Realizing that their shared Kryptonian DNA result in shared vulnerabilities, Superman retrieves the Kryptonite spear and sacrifices himself to impale Doomsday with it, while Doomsday stabs Superman with his bone protrusions.
Luthor is arrested after Lane exposes his numerous crimes; when he is visited by Batman in prison, he gloats that Superman's death has made Earth vulnerable to new threats from beyond Earth. A memorial is held for Superman in Metropolis, while Wayne, Lane, Martha and Prince attend a private ceremony in Smallville. After the funeral, Wayne swears to Prince that he will assemble a team to protect the world in Superman's absence. Later, a faint heartbeat begins echoing from Superman's grave and the dirt around it begins to levitate.
Design:
Michael Wilkinson is reprising his duties as costume designer. He updated the Superman suit from Man of Steel slightly so that it "feels fresh and right for this installment of Zack Snyder's comic-book universe".The first Batsuit featured in the film is influenced by the one seen in The Dark Knight Returns;unlike the suits seen in previous live-action Batman films, it is made of cloth instead of armor. An image of the Wonder Woman costume was revealed at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, in which the costume desaturates the red, blue, and gold colors that make up the costume of most versions of the character.A second Batsuit was also unveiled at Comic-Con, and unlike the first, it is armored.Aquaman's look in this film, unlike most versions of the character which show him in a bright orange and green wetsuit, shows him "tattooed in Maori-like patterns", and wearing a suit "decked out in shades of gold, black and silver armor". According to the Warner Bros. Studios lot, the next generation Batmobile combined inspiration from both the sleek, streamlined design of classic Batmobiles and the high-suspension, military build from the more recent Tumbler from the Dark Knight Trilogy. Designed by production designer Patrick Tatopoulos, the Batmobile is about 20 feet long and 12 feet wide.
Filming:
Larry Fong joined the crew as cinematographer after previously having worked with Zack Snyder in 300, Watchmen. At the end of the month, construction began on the Kent farm seen in Man of Steel for the film. The principal photography involving the main cast of the film began on May 19, 2014, in Detroit, Michigan, with scenes featuring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince being filmed early on May 16.Additional filming began in Chicago, Illinois in November 2014. Other locations included the Michigan Motion Picture Studios, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University, Yorkville, Illinois, and New Mexico. Sequences of the film, including a scene depicting the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents, were filmed using IMAX cameras. The planned shoot in Morocco were shifted to New Mexico due to incidents related to the 2014 Ebola outbreak. Principal photography wrapped on December 5, 2014.
Music:
Hans Zimmer returned from Man of Steel to compose the film score, emphasizing a challenge to not reuse the themes he established with the Batman character from Christopher Nolan's trilogy. Junkie XL, who provided additional music in Man of Steel, also returned for this film, helping to compose the theme for Batman. Originally, Zimmer enlisted Junkie XL to compose the Batman material, with Zimmer planning to focus solely on the Superman side of the score, but the final Batman theme was written by both composers as a collaboration. The soundtrack album for the score was released on March 18, 2016, via the Water Tower Music label.
